April 27, 2020

The unforeseen challenges caused by the Coronavirus pandemic is requiring country leaders to navigate a broad range of interrelated issues that span from keeping their citizens safe, shoring up their health systems, and ensuring that there is a constant supply of essential goods available.

In line with such perspectives, all the Velogic offices worldwide are endeavouring to support the healthcare industry more than ever. Our global teams are assisting with various movement of essential commodities as well as health related shipments. While some of the countries are on the receiving side, our colleagues from India and Madagascar are also partnering with our customers to facilitate the export of such shipments.

As we continue to monitor the outbreak, please find below an update of the situation in the territories we are present and some power trade lanes:

Further to the extension of the confinement, the present sanitary curfew is to be suspended on May 04, 2020. The Government is presently working on a Covid-19 bill which will pave the way post-confinement. More details on the measures will be announced during this week.

The logistics environment remains unchanged since last week with our various operations working with reduced workforce, similar to the various concerned stakeholders like Ministries, customs, etc… The port terminal is maintaining operations on a 24/7 schedule.

As airlines are randomly operating cargo flights (including some special flights scheduled after suspension of the lockdown), we request customers to reach out to our teams, should there be any pending order – for both import and export. In order to ease the process, while most of the employees are working from home, we recommend that importers/exporters provide shipment details by clicking below:

The French Prime Minister will address the population tomorrow evening. Some of the broad guidelines for the “after lockdown” period will also be shared during the intervention – including the sanitary measures.

We shall be communicating more on these measures by Wednesday as it will also provide clarifications on work and public transport conditions.

In the meantime, our colleagues from Velogic France keep providing support to customers for movement of masks from China, Korea, Madagascar, Turkey and Bangladesh.

It is to be noted that due to the massive imports and various origins, the customs authorities are closely monitoring on the type of commodities being imported, while introducing rules and regulations where necessary.

It was reported by the President of GEFP (Groupement des Entreprises Franches et Partenaires) that with most of the freezone companies not operating, there has been a drop of 90% in exports from Madagascar.

The active 10% export is mainly being driven by the freezone mask manufacturers and Velogic Madagascar is assisting various textile companies for export, mainly to France.

The national closure will be maintained until May 05, 2020.

Based on latest Government decisions, apparel makers in Dhaka & Chittagong have been able to reopen factories on a small scale yesterday (as part of a first phase). The remaining factories will be gradually opening as from today – while maintaining safety guidelines to ensure workers’ safety.

Moreover, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has extended the suspension of all international and domestic passenger flights until May 07, 2020, with exception to China as well as any other special flights, air ambulance, emergency landing and cargo flights.

Chittagong port continues to operate 24/7, limiting the risk of any possible congestion, as initially forecasted due to uncleared import containers. Berth occupancy, which used to be 72 hours has reached up to 6-9 days.
